Gul describes what it was like living as a Uyghur in Beijing: Local police would come inspect her belongings in her home, and make her pledge to refrain from certain activities. Uyghurs who had contact with foreigners would be called into the police station, never to return. Gul was constantly surveilled through the apps on her phone.
