“The School Gate Keepers Changed to Policemen”

A

A chronicles how political education slowly turned into internment: “Political education” in villages turned into authorities accusing many Uyghurs under the age of 45 of being terrorists or separatists. Villagers were forced to write confessions of their mistakes. Authorities began to use an empty government building for “vocational training,” where they held people from many different villages. Eventually, no one was allowed in or out of the building to visit the people detained there.
